Crafting Kishiwada’s Danjiri ── Preserving Tradition, Sharing Passion
In the heart of Kishiwada, Osaka, the Danjiri Festival roars to life every year with breathtaking energy. It’s not just a celebration—it’s a symbol of pride, history, and the spirit of the local people. Among the many festivals in Japan, the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival stands out for its intensity and its spectacular wooden floats, known as danjiri, which are pulled at remarkable speeds through narrow streets.
These floats are more than just festival objects—they are works of art, showcasing intricate carvings and the soul of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. That’s where we come in. We are artisans who craft the actual danjiri used in the festival. Our mission is to preserve this culture and bring its beauty to the world.
From the very beginning, we put our heart into every piece. We carefully choose pine logs by examining the grain and resin quality. To prevent cracking during drying, the wood is soaked in water tanks for months. Two months before the festival, we remove the logs and begin a slow drying process, even applying Vaseline to the sides to control moisture release. The final touches—like shaping the wooden wheels (koma)—are done with care and pride.
Kishiwada’s danjiri holds a special place in the hearts of those who experience it. It’s not just the scale or spectacle—it’s the depth of craftsmanship, the connection to tradition, and the shared excitement that make it truly unique. With fewer traditional woodworkers today, we feel a strong responsibility to carry this legacy forward.

岸和田のだんじりをつくるということ──伝統を守り、想いを届ける
大阪・岸和田にて毎年開催されるだんじり祭りは、その迫力と熱気で日本中でも特に人気の高い祭礼です。狭い道を猛スピードで駆け抜ける巨大な地車（だんじり）は、地域の誇りであり、歴史であり、人々の魂そのものです。
私たちは、その本物のだんじりを制作している職人です。だんじりは単なる祭具ではありません。精密な彫刻、迫力ある構造、そして受け継がれてきた技が詰まった、まさに“動く芸術”です。岸和田のだんじりが特別視されるのは、技術の高さ、地域との一体感、そしてその存在感のすべてが他とは一線を画しているからです。
素材選びから仕上げまで、私たちは一切妥協しません。松の原木は、木目や樹脂の含み具合を見極めて選定します。乾燥による割れを防ぐため、長期間水槽に浸け、祭りの約2ヶ月前に引き上げてから、ゆっくりと乾燥させていきます。その際、側面にはワセリンを塗って乾燥の進み具合を調整します。最終的に駒（車輪）などを手作業で仕上げ、祭にふさわしい地車が完成します。
宮大工を含む職人の数が減少している今、私たちはこの伝統を守りながら、世界にも発信していく責任があると感じています。岸和田のだんじりの魅力が、より多くの人々に届くことを願っています。
